Duel of Swords Warlord Tournament

By TERA STARFARE
May 27, 2007

Both the first and second place winners of this tournament have already claimed their prizes. However this tournament was awesome from what I have heard and read about it. Harris definitely has done it justice here y'all!

13 Warlords, 8 rounds, 5 hours, 2 prizes. In short, that is what the Spring Cycle Warlord Tournament amounted to. But of course those fortunate enough to have been in attendance know that the action was fast and furious and the recap cannot do this tournament justice!

ROUND ONE

Thirteen showed up out of a potential eighteen Warlords and once reseeding those in attendance had been completed the first round matches were fought with haste!

Morgan le Fay defeats Bode Bojangles, 5-3 in 7 rounds. Sartan defeats Jake Thrash, 5-3 in 8 rounds. Bran Bale defeats Vanion Shadowcast, 5-3 in 8 rounds. Artemus Kurgen defeats Cassius Gaius Maximius, 5.5-3 in 10 rounds. Aya Hayashibara defeats Kaja Adair, 5-3 in 11 rounds. Xerzes Maureen defeats Leo de Lorenzo, 7-6 in 11 rounds,

Cletus Ganderfald receives the opening round bye as the number one seeded competitor.

ROUND TWO

As in any double elimination style tournament round two saw the night's first ejections in Bode, Leo, and Vanion. Though in what could only be considered a rare and spectacular event the number of eliminations in round two matched the number of *shutouts*. The only shutouts of the evening were in this round, two of them coming at the hands of duelists that would make their way into the finals.

Aya Hayashibara defeats Xerzes Maureen, 5-0 in 5 rounds. Cletus Ganderfald defeats Bran Bale, 5-0 in 7 rounds. Jake Thrash defeats Vanion Shadowcast, 5-0 in 5 rounds. Cassius Gaius Maximius defeats Bode Bojangles, 5-3 in 7 rounds. Kaja Adair defeats Leo de Lorenzo, 5-4 in 10 rounds. Morgan le Fay defeats Artemus Kurgen, 5-2 in 9 rounds.

Sartan was given the bye in this round.

ROUND THREE

Round three proved to be a precursor of things to come and was host to another trio of eliminations, seeing Xerzes, Kaja, and Cassius step from the rings with two losses on their record.

Cletus Ganderfald defeats Aya Hayashibara, 5-4 in 11 rounds. Jake Thrash defeats Xerzes Maureen, 5-4 in 6 rounds. Morgan le Fay defeats Sartan, 5-3 in 7 rounds. Artemus Kurgen defeats Kaja Adair, 5-4 in 10 rounds. Bran Bale defeats Cassius Gaius Maximius, 5-4 in 11 rounds

ROUND FOUR

Round four was the host of the first serious confrontation of the evening as Cletus and Morgan squared off to decide the fate of the Winner's Bracket, assuring one of them a prize. Their confrontation held the crowd's attention for a mesmerizing fifteen rounds in what would prove to be not only the second longest match of the night but the second highest scoring. Artemus and Sartan found themselves eliminated well before the Winner's Bracket was decided.

Cletus Ganderfald defeats Morgan le Fay, 7-5.5 in 15 rounds. Jake Thrash defeats Artemus Kurgen, 5-3 in 6 rounds. Bran Bale defeats Sartan, 5-3 in 8 rounds.

Aya Hayashibara was granted the bye in this round.

ROUND FIVE

Now it was crunch time for the final four left in the Loser's Bracket. Aya came off her round four rest ready for action and dispatched Jake while relative newcomer to the ranks Bran Bale continued his impressive streak and knocked Morgan out of the tournament.

Aya Hayashibara defeats Jake Thrah, 5-4 in 12 rounds. Bran Bale defeats Morgan le Fay, 5-4 in 9 rounds.

ROUND SIX

Two competitors. One step away from an assured prize. To lose here would be heartbreaking, but someone had to go home. In this instance it was Bran, the lowest seed in the tournament, but one wouldn't know that to take a gander at his impressive third place showing defeating last cycle's WLT winner Vanion, two former Overlords in Cassius and Sartan, and seasoned veteran Morgan.

Aya Hayashibara defeats Bran Bale, 5-2 in 7 rounds.

ROUND SEVEN

And thusly the final showdown was set. After sitting out for two rounds it's quite possible the adrenaline had worn off for Cletus. Either that or Aya was simply out for blood, eager to avenge her loss in round three. She did so, forcing the tournament to a decisive and final winner take all eighth round.

Aya Hayashibara defeats Cletus Ganderfald, 5-3 in 9 rounds.

ROUND EIGHT

In what had to be one of the longest, most grueling, gutwrenching matches in the history of Warlord Tournament finales Aya and Cletus battled for a total of seventeen rounds, fighting fatigue even moreso than one another in several instances. In the end there was only one wearied warrior standing.

Cletus Ganderfald defeats Aya Hayashibara, 7-6 in 17 rounds.

Cletus opted for the Intercession Free Overlord Challenge as his prize, leaving Aya with the Baronial Challenge as her consolation. A full tournament record for each individual is listed below. The evening's festivities were officiated by Harris, Wyheree, and Rory.

Overlord Challenge Harris vs Cletus

By TERA STARFARE
June 7, 2007

All Hail the new 4 time Overlord Cletus Ganderfald! This new reign for him began when he entered the Warlord Tournament and came out there the winner. First prize being an intercession free shot at the current Overlord which happened to be Harris. The details of their match which was officiated by Deluthan follow below as were posted on the corkboard in the Arena for all to see.

On the night of June 7th, 2007, I did witness the challenge between the winner of this spring's Warlord Tournament, Cletus Ganderfald, and Overlord Harris D'artainian. The Warlord dueled under the flag of Polaris, his lady of honor was Arane Ganderfald, and his second was Magnus Eques. Harris D'artainian dueled under the watchful eye of Athena, his lady of honor was Sarah Allian, and his second was Sartan. The Overlord requested the challenge be conducted in the Best-of-Three format. So it was.

The first duel began very much in favor of Overlord D'artainian, as he showed himself ready to defend. After five rounds, he held a 4-0 lead and threatened to open the night with a shutout. Warlord

Ganderfald's experience began to shine through, however, as he racked up four quick points of his own to bring the duel to a tie. In the tenth round, the Warlord attempted his second slash, and, as it failed him in the opening round, it failed him in the end, allowing another of the Overlord's attacks to beat him.

In hindsight, one must wonder if, through the events of the opening the duel, the Warlord did not plant a seed of dissonance within the Overlord's pysche to disrupt the hubris the Overlord displayed at the start of the match. At the beginning of the second duel, the Overlord caught the Warlord's attack for the 1-0 lead, but it would be the last lead he would see this night: Two rounds later, the Warlord tied the score at one apiece; with the score at two apiece in the fifth, the Warlord scored three subsequent points, answered by the Overlord only in the final round as the two exchanged cuts.

The third duel started as the last one ended, with the duelists again trading blows. Overlord D'artainian continued to attack, while the Warlord began a flurry of parries. It was not until he trailed 3-1 that the Overlord pulled back. With the score at 4-2 in the seventh round, the Warlord Ganderfald expertly eluded a high attack from the Overlord to secure the victory and the beginning of his fourth reign.

Duel of Magic All Ranks Tournament

By TERA STARFARE
June 4, 2007

Topaz herself put this one on the board y'all!

Thank you everyone for coming out to the Isle this evening. You all made for a record turnout. 16, yes 16 casters came to compete and to keep Gnimish and myself busy. It was the wonderful kind of busy I can never ger quite enough of.

After round 1 we were left with Rena, Illusia, Lem, Mellisandre, Etherean, Xerzes, Tasslehofl and Kaylin to continue while Artemus, Wyheree, Gnimish, Brigath, Chris, Felix, Solace and Vasvrae were released to enjoy the beach party.

After round two we released Lem, Xerzes, Tasslehofl and Kaylin to join the party, while Rena, Illusia, Mellisandre and Etherean went on to round three.

Illusia and Rena emerged victorious from round three. That left Etherean and Mellisandre to duel for the third place. It was a ver close duel, but Etherean managed to secure the win in the 14th round.

Then Illusia and Rena were to duel for first and second price. Only the Isle stepped in and cut the duel short. So it happened that Illusia was declard the tournament winner and Rena the runner up, even though were undefeated.

Horatio Defeats Rena for Old Temple

By TERA STARFARE

The P'Imp himself officiated this one folks and here it is in his very own words!

I wuz thur!!! Tha P'Imp wuz thur!!!!

You see, Horatio got some grant and he said "I'll challenge Rena!" Rena said "ok" so they met during my shift to see who would get Old Temple.

Rena dueled under the colors of ATR and DoD. Max was her second. Horatio was colorless, secondless and ladyless. Rena went for the best of three thing.

For the first duel both duelists were reeeeeeeeally careful, so careful that the match went on for 18 rounds!! Horatio scored three points early, and that's all he scored since Rena won the match 5-3.

On to duel two! This one was intense. Horatio was winning the match 4-0.5 by round six. Then Rena decided she was not gonna go down easy and brough the match to 4-4 after 10 rounds. Horatio then fancily stepped around her fancy circular parry and got the point to win the match!

Then came the biggie!! The duel that will decide who will be the new Baron of Old Temple! This was a very intense and close match. By round four the score was 2-2, then for the next two rounds Rena scored two points to bring the score to 4-2. By round eight the score is 4-4. Then Horatio went for the thrust that pinned Rena's low cut. Horatio got the point and the win!

Duelers With Des

Panther
Preferred Dueling Areas: Duel of Fists

I had the opportunity to visit some with Panther this month. While he is very busy he did take a little time to answer a few questions for me and I am very thankful to him for doing so. Many of our readers may not realize that although he doesn't frequent The Outback but only very rarely it was he that is the founder of the Duel of Fists. And he does still participate on the rare occasion that one can drag him over to The Outback.

When I asked him which was his favorite of the three sports and why he had this to say. Panther: "Is this a trick question? Fists, of course. And 'cause I started."

I did reassure him that I wasn't asking trick questions and went on to ask him why he didn't stop by much these days if it was because he had his fill of fighting or if there was something more behind it. Panther: "Well… the Dragon keeps me pretty busy. But things changed over the years. I enjoy getting in the ring, but for me it was never about the ranks and titles. As things grew, that is where the focus went. 'course that only makes

sense. It is why the Duels are there. I still stop in when I get an urge to smack a friend or two around."

That had me wondering what his highest rank had been so me being me I did ask him. Panther: "mmm… Ruby I think? Maybe even for a couple weeks. Something to point out, for nearly the first year, the only people calling duels were myself, and then later Jake. So early on… I did not get a lot of opportunity to actually duel."

Then I got to wondering if when he had started it all if he ever had imagined it would be the sport and hold the status that it does today. Panther: "I do not remember ever thinking about it. I imagine there were nights in the beginning where I spent time sitting around waiting for someone to come duel that I wondered just what the heck I was doing. But no, I do not think I ever dwelled much on what it would be like these many years later."

I was curious and thought to see what kind of hobbies he would enjoy. Panther: "I hunt. While some of it goes to the kitchen at the Inn, and most the rest to One-Thumb the butcher, it is also a way for me to… relax. That, and working around the Inn itself. I am just about done fixing the roof on the stables. Sometimes being out there doing work like that is the best way to get away."

Then it was back to dueling with his advice to new duelers. Panther: "Dun let the higher ranks scare you. Get in there and mix it up with them when you can. You can learn more by losing to the experienced ones than beating up on other new duelers."
